A quality field of 29 combinations lined up to compete in this class, with six of them recording clear rounds, the fastest of which was Dana Sutton and the OTT gelding, Down Wind, in 70.05 seconds. All of these six combinations returned in an exciting jump-off to decide the class.
In the jump-off, five of the six combinations took at least a rail, leaving just one entrant to record double clear. Dana Sutton and Down Wind were the slowest combination around the course, and the most careful, and were the deserved winners.

CLASS 14: Norwood Gold Cup 1.45m
The final event on the Jumping program on the Premier arena, was the Norwood Gold Cup. This class, over 1.45m, saw a number of the hopefuls for Sunday’s main event of the show, the prestigious Horse of The Year Olympic Cup, take the opportunity for some valuable practice.
A high-class field of just 22 combinations were entered and seven of these were able to record clear rounds, the fastest going to Taupo young gun, Briar Burnett-Grant and Fiber Fresh Veroana in 81.86 seconds.
These seven combinations went through to the jump-off, however, the judges also invited the four fastest four-faulters to join them in what turned out to be a very interesting affair.
Of the eleven combinations in the jump-off, eight recorded clear rounds, including all the first round four-faulters, however, since their round 1 penalties were carried forward, they could not win. In the end it came down to a battle between the four combinations who had recorded double clear and the fastest of these was Oliver Croucher and the 11-year-old grey mare, Waitangi Surf, finishing in 53.56 seconds. Lily Tootill and Ulysses NZPH, along with Brooke Edgecombe and LT Holst Andrea filled the podium positions. We look forward to seeing how these combinations compete throughout the rest of the show.
