CLASS 33: Bucas Silver Fern Stakes 1.40-1.50m
The big class of the day was the Bucas Silver Fern Stakes and what a class it was! On a technical track, run over two rounds, the combination with the least penalties accumulated over the two rounds would be declared the winners. However, it proved to be closer than that, with combinations needing to be separated by time in the final round to decide the placings.
The top ten riders from Round 1 were invited back for the second round.
Doug Isaacson and Elmo were the first to take on the second round, bringing 5 penalties from Round 1. This combination took an additional couple of rails in the second round to finish on a total of 8. Things didn’t go to plan for Lily Tootil and Ulysses NZPH with the combination eliminated for two refusals.
Melody Matheson on Cortaflex Graffiti MH were the next to tackle the course. Carrying 4 penalties from Round 1, they delivered a fabulous clear in a time of 44.32 to go straight into the lead. Tess Williams and Sinatra II, also carrying 4 from the first round also managed to go clear in a time of 46.45, taking them into 2nd place at this point of the competition.
Natasha Brooks and Twerk entered on 1 fault and had a great round, until, to the moans of the crowd, took an unfortunate rail at the last to give a total of 5 penalties. Following his sister into the arena, Nick Brooks was next out on Versace C. Also entering on 1 penalty, the excitement was building as he managed to edge out Natasha by finishing clear in 50.92, taking him straight into the lead.
The first of the combinations to enter on zero penalties was Kimberly Bird and Cera Cassina. Knowing there were only three riders behind her and $9000 to the winner, Bird gave it her best. A fabulous round, including a great line to the Baileys fence but sadly the back rail on the second part of the double fell, relegating them to 6th place.
Tegan Fitzsimon and Windermere Cappuccino entered, knowing they had to jump clear to take the lead. Covering the ground in decent time (45.20) they did indeed deliver the first double clear of the class to guarantee themselves a podium place.
Their lead didn’t last long though, as 16 year old Annabel Frances, fresh from her win in the Week 2 Gold Tour at Takapoto, came out on the fabulous little Carado GHP to ride an incredible clear round, with a skill way beyond her years, in time of 45.04 to leap straight into the lead.
There was only one combination that could take the victory from Frances, Tom Tarver-Prievbe and Equifibre Popeye, winners of last year’s Norwood Gold Cup. And take the win they did, in a thrilling conclusion to the class, they delivered the third double clear in a super fast time of 41.99, over 3 seconds faster than Frances.
Congratulations to Tom Tarver-Prievbe and to all the other placegetters in this class.
