Samantha Mac is back!

Samantha McIntosh and the 11-year-old mare Takapoto Alaid De Chez Nous took out the feature event at the Hygain Feeds Rotorua Spring Show last Sunday. Held at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo, the ESNZ Horse Grand Prix class attracted a strong field of 12 entrants, in which McIntosh beat off five other combinations in an exciting jump-off. Second place went to last week’s Grand Prix winning pair at Feilding of Melody Matheson and Cortaflex Graffiti MH by just 0.11 seconds. Reigning World Cup series winning combination of Tegan Fitzsimon and Windermere Cappuccino came in third.

It was the first major win by McIntosh since she returned home following campaigning in Europe for a number of years. Now based near Cambridge, Takapoto Alaid De Chez Nous is one of three horses that came from Europe with her.

The weather was a factor over the weekend. When the forecast rains arrived on Sunday, organisers quickly shuffled the main classes on the program from the outdoor grass arena to the indoor arena. However, the rain and winds saw a number of the fields on the two outdoor arenas notably diminish.

Sunday’s Country TV pony Grand Prix was taken out by Pukekawa rider Katie Readings and 13-year-old mare Rump Shaker. They beat home Sophia Hall and TCG Centadel by just 0.2 seconds in an eight-way jump-off. Annie Moffett from Napier filled both third and fourth placings on Piripi and Tane Mahuta respectively.

The feature event on the Saturday program was the Heathcote Lodge Equestrian 1.40m class. Local teenager Annabel Francis and the family owned gelding Carado GHP were successful, taking the win from Samantha McIntosh who was just warming up for the Sunday Grand Prix with Takapoto Alaid De Chez Nous. McIntosh and Takapoto James S, another of her former European horses came third.
